Location

Greenville is in the Coastal Plains section of eastern North Carolina‚ 85 miles east of Raleigh and 155 miles south of Richmond‚ Va.

Beginnings

Greenville was founded in 1771 and incorporated in 1774. It was originally known as Martinsborough but changed its name in 1786 to honor North Carolina Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene. Pitt County‚ formed in 1760‚ was named for British statesman William Pitt.
