School of Dentistry Coming to ECU
Exciting plans are under way to establish a School of Dentistry at East Carolina University following the state legislature’s allocation of $25 million toward the $90 million project.
The funding will pay for the school’s design and an initial phase of construction.
Slated to open in 2011‚ the school will offer training in primary-care dentistry‚ with additional coursework in pediatrics and advanced education in general dentistry. An emphasis on clinical research is also anticipated‚ says Dr. Greg Chadwick‚ associate vice chancellor for oral health at ECU and interim dean of the new dental school.
“We want our students to focus on rural and underserved populations‚” Chadwick says. “We want to graduate more primary-care dentists. We want to give students from minority and underserved populations the opportunity for a dental school education. And we want to improve oral health across the state of North Carolina.”
Chadwick says ECU dental students will spend the first three years on campus. Much of the senior year will be spent at one of 10 service/learning centers that will be established in areas of need across the state. By bringing oral health providers to underserved areas‚ Chadwick is hopeful that ECU will not only provide care for patients but also help establish lifelong dental habits in children. The outreach can also help showcase dentistry as a career option.
“Being able to take the dental school out to the people of North Carolina is going to be a wonderful opportunity‚” he says.
