The renaissance of Uptown Greenville has a new poster child. The recently renovated Fleming House, with its inviting light gray porch (sponsored by Manpower) and sun-dried tomato-colored cupola, is a perfect symbol of the rebirth of this historic district as well as a vital link to the city’s past.

Residents have known it for a long time, but now it’s official: Greenville has been named a “Cool City” by the Sierra Club.

Mealtimes at Grandma Finelli’s house were something to behold. After emigrating from southern Italy in the early 1900s, Maria Scarenzi Finelli had 12 children, who went on to have many children of their own. On Sunday afternoons, 40 to 50 people would sit down for Grandma Finelli’s spaghetti and meatballs and baked penne.

Pirates have long been linked to the Coastal Plains of North Carolina. And if Paul Clifford has anything to say about it, pirates will soon be spotted on the streets of Greenville once again. As associate vice chancellor for alumni relations at East Carolina University, Clifford is heading up the Painted Pirate Project.

Myriah and Brian Shewchuk could easily be mistaken for lifelong Pirates fans.
