Greenville North Carolina

More than a decade ago, the city of Greenville, North Carolina was struck by hurricane Floyd, and the ensuing flood caused damages in excess of a billion dollars. Greenville, however, has displayed an impressive power of recuperation over the years, and has become a standard that other cities and people can learn from, as well as a location in which it pays off to settle. For example, Greenville has been designated both as one of the one hundred best communities for young people, and one of the ten best places for business and careers. Furthermore, Greenville is North Carolina's Tidewater and Coastal Plain health, entertainment and educational epicenter.

One of the first indicators of the wholesomeness of Greenville is the fact that its economy is based on the two pillars of health care and education, its two main industries. The largest employer is Pitt County Memorial Hospital, University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina's principal teaching hospital and affiliated with the Brody School of Medicine. Pitt County Memorial Hospital is the brainchild of local doctor Charles Laughinghouse who, with three other colleagues, raised 85,000 dollars in 1923 to build the hospital. The latest addition to this institution is the East Carolina Heart Institute, inaugurated in 2009 and which has already been recognized with the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence, presented by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. Pitt County Memorial Hospital as a whole has been lauded by the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association for its high quality stroke care.

The second largest employer is East Carolina University (ECU), North Carolina's largest higher learning institution. ECU houses nine undergraduate colleges, a graduate school, and two professional schools, including the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Fine Arts and Communication, the College of Health and Human Performance, the College of Human Ecology, the College of Technology and Human Sciences, and others. Moreover, the J.Y. Joyner Library contains close to 1.3 million bound volumes, 2.5 million pieces of microform, 532,000 government documents and over 24,000 journal subscriptions. Other higher learning institutions in Greenville are Shaw University and Pitt Community College.

Culture and sports also hold a predominant place in Greenville. The aforementioned ECU provides concerts, theatrical and dance productions, travel films and lectures, while the Greenville Museum showcases local art and rotating exhibitions. The proximity of campus certainly provides a reason for a varied nightlife in local bars and nightclubs. As for athletic prowess, the East Carolina Pirates represent ECU and Greenville in college basketball, football, swimming and diving, baseball and softball. Sports facilities include Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium for football, Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum for men's and women's basketball, and Clark-LeClair Stadium for baseball.
